Alberta Slim is the real thing

TRADITIONAL values and patriotic sentiments are central to Alberta Slim's music. Alternative values and a world focus are central to the Vancouver Folk Music Festival.

But for several magic moments July 17 - 19 festival-goers experienced the wonderful way in which music can bridge such gaps.

Alberta Slim, 88, won the hearts of the crowd with songs extolling the virtues of Canada and British Columbia, along with regionally-oriented classics such as 'Apple Blossom Time in the Annapolis Valley' and 'Red River Waltz.'

But the greatest applause was reserved for his yodeling, evidence of his many years on the road as a country singer.

Alberta Slim (born Eric C. Edwards) has lived in Surrey for the past 40 years, but points out that 'Surrey Slim' doesn't have quite the right ring. And besides, his history supports his nickname. Born in 1907 in England, he moved with his parents to Alberta, where he grew up riding horses and roping cattle.

During the hard times of the 1930s, he took his guitar to Regina and was soon recording cowboy songs, along with just a couple of other people - Hank Snow and Wilf Carter.

Alberta Slim points out that "Most of my songs talk about the Lord" in one way or another. "I believe in Christ, " he adds. "I believe he's with me … I thank him for my longevity every day."

Alberta Slim has recently put out four CDs which cover his career. To find out more about them contact Cameron Noyes at Box 97 - 1895 Commercial Drive, Vancouver, B.C. V5N 4A6 or call (604) 254-2672.
